Interesting article in the ‘Times this week about eating disorders. Although on one level the notion of more and more older women suffering from these issues seems surprising, on another level it’s not at all…I mean, it’s not easy to take that self-deprecating high schooler of the 80’s and fill her with self-worth and self-love in a world constantly reinforcing the messages that our value lies in our hotness and that hotness is this very narrow notion that fades with age. I don’t know about you all, but as I get further from that beauty imperative I couldn’t even appreciate embodying at 20, it takes more and more intentional work and loving support to develop self assurance and a healthy relationship with food. At 41 the conversations I have with other women about our bodies are perhaps a little more self-aware that they were at 16, but there is still an enormous well of suffering there.
